Lewis - youngest World Champion 11.12.08
Gordon Brown hailed Lewis Hamilton as "the pride of Britain" earlier this week. Speaking at the British Racing Drivers' Club annual awards ceremony, sponsored by The Daily Telegraph, the UK Prime Minister described the McLaren driver as "a true World Champion, someone who has excelled at everything he has done, someone who makes me incredibly proud to be British. To come back from adversity after going so close in 2007, makes us even more proud of him," Brown said. "I asked Ron Dennis, McLaren Team Principal, what the secret of his success was and he said, "sacrifice, training and doing all the work that was necessary to become the World Champion." That is what makes us so proud. He is a true World Champion."
In the build-up to this weekend's BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards, it is perhaps worth reminding ourselves of what Lewis Hamilton has actually achieved in his motor-sport career thus far.
He almost stole the show in his rookie season but just one year on and his wish has been duly granted.
Lewis Hamilton has deservedly claimed the official title of Formula 1's youngest ever World Champion.
The 23-year-old Briton's Formula One career so far includes the following statistics in just two seasons :
9 wins
207 points
35 race starts
22 podium positions
29 points finishes
13 pole positions
21 front-row starts
3 fastest race laps
- youngest world champion
- youngest world championship leader (Spain 2007)
- youngest driver to score pole, win, fastest lap hat-trick (Japan 2007)
- fastest driver to reach 100 career points
- youngest British driver to (1) win in F1 (Canada 2007), (2) secure pole position (Canada 2007) and (3) register fastest lap (Malaysia 2007).
