Intercontinental Cup for 2011 7.07.10
A seven-round Intercontinental Cup will grace the international sportscar calendar next year and both Audi and Peugeot seem committed to run in it.
The Le Mans 24-Hour race (on 11-12 June 2011) is to be one of the qualifying rounds and will be a double-points event.
The Series thus effectively becomes an Endurance World Championship, racing as it does on three continents. The Cup kicks off in Florida, in the USA, with the Sebring 12-Hours and includes three classic 1,000kms races at Spa-Francorchamps, Silverstone and Fuji in Japan. The Petit Le Mans event at Road Atlanta in Georgia, USA, is also included as is (provisionally) the 6-Hours of Zhuhai, China.
The Le Mans test day will return in 2011 after an absence of two years - it will occur in late April or early May. The ACO has said that it considers it important to stage a test on the fabulous Circuit de la Sarthe at least a month before the great race in the first year of a new prototype rulebook.
Meanwhile, Audi has hinted that it might take a leaf out of Peugeot's book and build a closed racing prototype for next year. The petrol-engined teams, such as Britain's Aston Martin, remain concerned as to whether new rules really will provide performance equivalency with the recently all-conquering diesels. And GT1 has gone, leaving the GT field open in GT2 format to the great sportscar manufacturers of the world to go head to head - Aston Martin, BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Ford, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Porsche and Spyker.
